Synopsis:
Hackers are misunderstood. In fact, the term “hacker” is usually associated with a criminal who uses a computer for morally reprehensible purposes. In reality, a lot of self-identified hackers are do-it-yourself (DIY) electricians, programmers, security consultants and artists who use pieces of technology to explore and modify.
Hacker Ethic is a provocative feature documentary that explores the politics and culture of the latest generation of technology geeks.
Although their personalities vary in range from being total social misfits to high-tech entrepreneurs, their independence is in the same spirit that pioneered this country. Their skills have driven them to test the ethical boundaries of ownership, security, privacy, censorship… and also make them colorful documentary subjects.
One big problem is that these voices have no mainstream outlet, so they are very often misrepresented and underutilized. These people could change the world for the better, but for whatever reason they have trouble conforming to what our culture may need to understand or interpret them.
This film aims to cover the debates and culture clambering on the cutting edge of emerging technologies through accessible and interesting characters.
